Liquorice not only has many medicinal properties, but it is also delicious to drink. It combines well with Chinese angelica or Peony root for menopausal and menstrual problems, and with oat straw and St John's Wort for exhaustion and nervous debility. It may be mixed with mullein and marshmallow leaf for dry, hoarse coughs and pharyngitis. Combine with meadowsweet for gastritis and acid indigestion.
Directions for Use
Add 1 to 2 tsps. of root to a large mugful of water in a stainless steel pan. Bring to the boil, and then simmer, with a lid on the pan, for 20 minutes or so. Strain and drink up to 3 cups daily.
Precautions
Avoid in pregnancy, breast-feeding or if taking digoxin. Do not take if suffering from high blood pressure or a heart disorder. Liquorice may increase the effects of synthetic hormones - seek advice therefore if taking HRT, the contraceptive pill or steroids before using. Seek advice if taking anti-coagulant therapy. Best avoided in potassium deficiency, anaemia and bile stones. Short-term usage recommended.
Notes on the Herb
Liquorice is one of the most commonly used herbs in the world. It supports the adrenal glands, making it useful in conditions of exhaustion and long term stress. It contains plant oestrogens which can help menopausal and menstrual problems. Liquorice is also a powerful anti-inflammatory and soothing herb useful for peptic ulcers, gastritis, indigestion, dry irritating coughs, pharyngitis and laryngitis. Finally it is a gentle laxative. Suitable for children.
